Gurugram: A law enforcement official, deputed as special police officer in Gurugram police, was crushed to death by a speeding SUV in the wee hours of Monday.
Police said that the deceased, identified as Mukesh Kumar, was mowed down by the car at Old Delhi road near Palam Vihar around 2.00 am on Monday.
According to officials, Kumar – who had been inducted into Gurugram police just four months ago – was on surveillance duty.
Finding the movement of a Mahindra Xylo to be suspicious, he asked the vehicle to stop so that it can be checked.
However, the driver paid no heed to Kumar's warnings, kept speeding his vehicle and, in the process, rammed it into the 35-year-old official, before fleeing away.
Sources said that the injuries sustained by Kumar were so severe that he died on the spot, before he could be admitted to hospital for treatment.
Gurugram police said they have begun their investigations, and initial leads suggest that the vehicle had a Punjab registration.
A case under sections 353 (preventing a civil servant from performing his duty), 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) under the Indian Penal Code has been registered.
It is yet to be ascertained how many people were present in the vehicle.
Commissioned in 2004, Kumar first joined first Haryana State Industrial Security Force (HSISF) in 2004.
When recruitment of HSISF was disbanded, he joined as SPO in Gurugram Police on July 24, 2017.
This is not the first time that policemen fulfilling their duties have been targeted by commuters.
In June last year, two drunken youths tried to run over the Station Head Officer of Sector-29 police station Vikas Kaushik, when they were asked to stop for checking.
Similarly, a traffic cop was seriously injured near IFFCO Chowk when he was hit by a drunken driver.
A few months later, a group of youngsters at MG Road was dispersed away by armed policemen, led by Kaushik m after they were charging towards policemen to harm them physically.
Many drunken and rash drivers, who have been penalised for violating norms, have also got into scuffle with law enforcement personnel and tried to harm them.
There have also been situations when gunshots have been exchanged between police and criminals on city streets.
