Collision on Delhi-Jaipur highway leaves truck driver battling for life

Gurugram: In yet another accident on the Delhi-Jaipur highway, which took place in the wee hours of Friday, the driver of a heavy vehicle was severely injured after his vehicle rammed into a pick-up truck from behind, leaving him sandwiched between the two vehicles. 
Both the drivers were rescued, with the condition of the heavy vehicle's driver reportedly critical. The incident occured around 4.30 am at Shankar Chowk point, when the pick-up truck broke down on the highway after its tyres got punctured. Immediately, a larger truck, being driven at a high speed, rammed into it from behind.
The crash resulted in the pick-up vehicle getting crumpled from behind and the driver of the heavy vehicle trapped inside his seat. He was ultimately resuced after the fire department used electric cutters to cut the vehicle and rescue him.
The man has been referred to Safadarjung Hospital in Delhi, where his condition is said to be critical. The other driver, who sustained less serious injuries, has also been referred to the same hospital.
It is estimated that two out of every three accidents on Delhi-Jaipur highway is caused by heavy vehicles. Various studies conducted on truck drivers have revealed that more than 50 per cent of the drivers of the trucks have poor eyesight.
Officials also indicate that a driver's visibility further reduces while driving heavy vehicles. Other factors resulting in road mishaps include fatigue, overspeeding, drunken driving and overloading of the vehicle.
