NEW DELHI: Delhi police has made it clear that it is going to have zero tolerance for people indulging in child-lifting rumour-mongering.

Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik said, "You can be assured that the Delhi Police is alert in this regard. There has been rumours of such kind in some states, there too it was confirmed they are mere rumours. In case someone tries to spread such rumours, Delhi police will deal with it

strictly."

Recently the incidences of thrashing and brutal mob attacks on innocent people have come to light from NCR region.

Fake messages on WhatsApp create panic amongst the people who in turn act irrationally against thsoe who they suspect to be child-lifters.

Recently, a man was killed and his brother was injured after a group thrashed them over rumours that they were on the prowl to kidnap children in western Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal.

In a similar incident, a woman who was taking her grandson for shopping in Ghaziabad in UP was thrashed by a mob over allegations that she was a child kidnapper.

In a bid to contain widespread rumours of child kidnapping leading to incidents of lynching in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has instructed all district police chiefs to slap National Security Act (NSA) against those who are found inciting mob or spreading rumours on social media.

However, in Delhi too, rumours have been seen circulating on Wattsapp and facebook regarding child lifting gangs being operational in the capital and nearby states.

With little means to verify the information, often some people fall prey to such rumours risking the safety of those innocent people who somehow get trapped in the crowd.
