New Delhi: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said that to strengthen the law and order situation in Delhi, the Centre has already sanctioned 3,139 positions in Delhi Police, while induction of nearly 4,000 more new personnel is underway.

Singh's comments came while inaugurating the new building of the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police of South West District, the Delhi Cantonment police station and Delhi Police residential complex.

He also launched the All-women SWAT team of Delhi Police at the programme, which was attended by Commissioner Amulya Patnaik and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.

Currently, women comprise about 10 per cent of the total strength of Delhi Police, which will be expanded to 30 per cent in the coming years, Singh said in his address.

He added that CCTNS, Smart City Project and Intelligent Traffic Management System will make the city safer. Singh also applauded the use of technical intelligence in fighting crime.

Quoting the statistics of last few years, the Minister appreciated the efforts of Delhi Police in curbing the crime and motivated its personnel to continue their good efforts.

Meanwhile, introducing the all-women SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) Team, Baijal said that this is the only such team in any police department across the country.

Baijal also lauded the fact that women from the North East are being motivated and trained, which will make Delhi Police a truly cosmopolitan and inclusive police force.

The all-women SWAT team is dedicated to tackling hardened criminals and to combat terrorist activities. The SWAT personnel will be equipped with AK-47 rifles, MP5 machine guns, Glock 17 or 26 pistols and corner shot devices for enhanced night vision.
