NEW DELHI: Two persons died after a decades-old building collapsed in south east Delhi's Taimoor Nagar in New Friends Colony on Friday.
One of the victims was the property's owner, 65-year-old Dhruv Kumar, was a retired director of National Commision for Schedule Castes.
The tragedy occurred when labourers were busy in demolition work of the 60-year-old structure, which led to the walls caving in while digging the basement.
Kumar, who was supervising the work, was struck inside the rubble along with two labourers. While one labourer escaped with minor injuries, the other Kishan Mondol got severe head injuries.
28-year-old Mondol and Kumar were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where both were declared brought dead.
"Around 9.30 am, we were here for work and soon I heard some sounds. I felt the walls would crumble. I told Dhruvji about it, but before anyone could act it collapsed and we were all struck inside. My left side was buried and I was rescued by people, but Kishan and Dhruvji were stuck deep," said Montu Mondol, the labourer who survived the accident.
Police teams from New Friends colony, NDRF teams and the Fire department reached the spot for rescue operations.
"We removed two injured men who were buried inside. It took us several hours to carefully remove the rubble and take them out," said a NDRF officer at the spot.
"It is a big tragedy for the family," said Rajkumar, younger brother of the deceased Kumar, who is survived by two sons.
As the building had collapsed near a busy road, lots of onlookers had gathered at the spot.
Many onlookers raised questions over the authorities for allowing the demolition work without proper notice.
"Had the authorities taken proper action before, and safety measures had been taken before demolishing the six decade-old building, lives would not have been lost," said Ram Singh, a local resident.
"We are taking proper action Taimoor Nagar building collapse case, where two people have died," said Romil Baaniya, DCP South East.
"A case, FIR number 359/17 under sections 304-A, 288, 336 and 337 of the IPC, has been registered against the owner of the building at New Friends Colony police station," the DCP said.
