Incident exposes negligence & cheating nature of builders

The Greater Noida building collapse incident is yet another major example of the negligence and cheating nature of builders by which they dupe innocent home buyers, risking their lives for making huge profits. Not only the builders, few corrupt officials from the authority and district administration also remain hand in glove with these builders as they also share a huge part of the profit earned.

Tuesday's night incident is one such major example of the irregularities found in real-estate sector. Poor construction quality, delayed possession, inadequate facilities and sheer negligence by the builder risk the lives of hundreds of home buyers spending their life time savings into the projects.

"The building was constructed illegally with weak foundations and use of poor construction material. Both the structures were illegal, built without acquiring the Greater Noida Authority's permission. We even wrote several times to the authority about the illegal construction of high rise buildings in the village but no actions were taken," said Vineet, a resident.

Locals said that Shahberi village is adjacent to Noida Extension, a hub of residential and commercial real-estate activities, thus attracting middle class families by the relatively low rates offered by unscrupulous builders.

As per Nirmal Kumar, a Greater Noida based RTI activist, he alarmed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Greater Noida Authority and Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration, in February, about the illegal ongoing construction in Shahberi village but no concrete action was taken.
