Beat constables go door to door to fight addiction in south west Delhi

New Delhi: In many clusters of south west Delhi, beat constables are seen visiting homes and distributing booklet printed in Hindi and English, and advising various families about the ill effect and harms caused by drug and liquor addiction.
According to officials in Delhi Police, before visiting the residential clusters and other areas, beat personnel were first sensitised about the ill effects of drugs. These policemen then carried forward the message to the residents of south west Delhi. Police have often found that in many criminal cases, the arrested accused are drug addicts and resorted to criminal activities so as to fulfill their addiction.
Cops have been continuously analysing the situation and, as a result, come up with the drug awareness drive, which involves distributing booklets and talking to people.
"All the police stations in the district will be sensitised and the message will be carried forward. Through the drive, we hope that crime will decrease," said a senior police officer.
Liquor is another major factor, which often leads to discord and tension in families.
The beat staff, during their visit, talk to various families and tell them about the ill-effects of alcohol and different drugs, and how addiction can be brought to an end.
A reason behind distributing these booklets in Hindi is that it is the easiest to understand to many people living in cluster areas.
Senior police officials believe that after counselling of the families and through reading the booklet, cases of violence can be decreased.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Monika Bharadwaj has been monitoring the whole day process of the initiative. She told Millennium Post they are taking all possible steps to curb crime in the area. "Drugs are one of the reasons behind crime and our initiative will help curb drug abuse in the area," said Bharadwaj.
The initiative was started after areas in the district that have been facing the problem of drug abuse were identified.
Recently, the district police had launched a unique initiative, titled 'Saheli', at Rangpuri Pahari Basti in Vasant Kunj.
Police claimed that under this initiative, as many as 1,200 young uneducated girls and women attended a free health check-up camp, followed by an awareness session on sexual abuse, sexually transmitted infections and personal hygiene.
