Gurugram: The impact of Millennium Post report was visible as the district authorities opened the locks and started the work for making the toilet functional at MG road. There are also reports that works have begun in making other toilets functional. On December 28, Millennium Post did a comprehensive story on how half of newly built public toilets were locked and therefore non functional. It had also published the images of public toilet at MG road that was locked.
The action by public authorities comes at a time when the annual cleanliness survey mandated by the Union Ministry of Urban Development begins on January 4 and will carry on till March.
On October 2, the Haryana government declared Gurugram as one of the few cities of India that is open defecation-free. Realities on the ground however indicates a different picture. Over hundred toilets set up by the Gurugram civic body, however, most of them are locked and out of reach for public.
The stench on the streets of Gurugram is not expected to end soon as shortage of public toilets continues to be a major challenge in the city. Tasked with the responsibility of setting up public toilets, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) continues to face the challenge of not getting land across different sectors in the city.
With MCG not getting land in the densely populated areas of the city, it is mostly opening public toilets near the surrounding villages that is not being frequented by a large numbers of passersby.
Meanwhile, not only in the sectors but also in posh public areas in the city like MG road and Golf Course road, lack of public toilets continues to be a major problem in the city.
"Women are hit the worst due to lack of public toilets. It's unfortunate that even as there have been certain toilets built by residential and market societies in city, no attention has been paid towards building women toilets," said Rahul Kapoor, a city resident.
It will be a big challenge for the public officials however to maintain these toilets. According to sources, a major reason why most of the toilets has been locked because there are not enough funds for maintenance of the newly constructed toilets.
