New Delhi: Police booked an African national for allegedly manhandling a traffic policeman at Dwarka Mor on Monday morning after a video went viral which shows the African holding and beating a traffic constable while he is being punched and kicked by a mob that tries to free the policeman from his grip. The African is seen being hit by helmet by the public while he keeps holding the policeman with both his arms.
According to police, the scuffle broke at around 10:45 am on Monday when three traffic policemen –constable Ajay, constable Gaurav and ASI Omprakash stopped the African national who was riding a Scooty without a helmet. When constable Ajay asked him for his Scooty papers, he tried to drive away. When the three policemen tried to stop him, he started punching constable Ajay.
As the onlookers gathered to see the African beating the policemen, some tried to intervene, However, soon the fight took an ugly turn as the public too joined in with some punching and kicking the African in an attempt to free the policeman. In the scuffle, both the policeman and the African national received injuries. The viral video which is doing rounds on social media shows some people even hitting the African with a helmet repeatedly on his head. "We have filed a case against the African, who according to our knowledge is from Nigeria and is here in India from 3 to 4 months. His name is Zammy alias Prince and we are investigating his purpose of stay in India. His passport is also being verified," said a police officer.
The Delhi Police has booked the African national under IPC sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public duty) 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty). The police said that though the arrest has not been made in the case, but a proper investigation in the matter is being conducted and sections would be added as the charges come up.
