40-year-old cop killed in road accident in east Delhi

NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old head constable Delhi Police was killed after his motorcycle was reportedly hit by an unidentified vehicle on Geeta Colony Road near Shakarpur area in east Delhi on Tuesday night.

The victim Rohit Nayar was rushed to nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital by some passersby, where he was declared dead, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Pankaj Singh on Wednesday.

Nayar was posted at the Sarita Vihar police station in southeast Delhi and had joined the force in 1997, he added.

The deceased was a resident of Krishna Nagar in Shahdara and is survived by his wife and two children, aged eight and two respectively.

Nayar's body has been sent for post-mortem and his family has been informed.

Meanwhile, the police has formed teams to locate the vehicle which has caused the accident.

CCTV footage from nearby areas is are being scanned to get any evidence of the offending vehicle or its driver.

Cops said that had the driver stopped and taken Nayar to the hospital in the golden hour, he could have been saved. However, by the time Nayar was taken to the hospital by the others, he succumbed to his injuries.
