4 bookies arrested from Lajpat Nagar for betting in Asia Cup

NEW Delhi: The Delhi Police has busted a betting syndicate and arrested four bookies for betting on recently-concluded Asia Cup cricket tournament.The four arrested accused have been identified as Sandeep Kumar, Harish Kumar, Naveen Kumar, Harvinder Singh. On the intervening night of September 28-29, the staff of Lajpat Nagar police station gathered intelligence about a cricket betting racket being operated in Lajpat Nagar.

A raiding team was formed immediately. At around 1 am during the night when the final of Asia Cup was being played between India and Bangladesh, the police team laid a trap at C-93, 3rd Floor, Lajpat Nagar-II, and conducted a raid at the premises and all four were arrested. From their possession, one laptop, eight mobile phones, calculator, registers, notebooks, playing cards were recovered.

During sustained interrogation, the accused disclosed that they all are known to each other and were in the business of property construction and property dealing on a commission basis but in the past few years due to the downturn in the real estate sector, they all suffered substantial losses in the business.

In order to earn quick money they started gambling and cricket betting but they again lost substantial amount of money. "All four accused planned to become bookie so that they can earn good commission on the bets. They selected house of accused Harish at C-93, Lajpat Nagar and all four used to gather there and with the help of internet and mobile phone, they used to take bets of punters. During the final of Asia Cup also they were busy in cricket betting," DCP South East Chinmoy Biswal said.
