The Delhi Police has recovered 16 antique shawls having historical importance after they were stolen by a group of young men from National Crafts Museum. The estimated cost of these stolen shawls is around Rs 2 crore. Three men have been arrested in this high profile burglary case by Delhi Police that took place on October 31 in National Crafts Museum.
"These shawls were brought from Kashmir and are 200-250 years old. It was a blind case and a challenge for Delhi Police as there was no clue about the thieves and stolen property. As the case was of national significance, a special team was constituted," said New Delhi DCP BK Singh.
While investigating, the Delhi Police grew suspicious when it came to know that two persons had been regularly visiting the Museum, one of them posing as scholar researching on the antiques. The cops started their investigation focussing on their surveillance on these two men.
Later, they came to know that on October 22, one of them had hidden himself in the Museum for exercising his pre-planned strategy to steal the shawls. They devised a plan and the suspected persons raised an alarm from inside and when he was brought outside the Museum, he stated that during his confinement in the Museum, he had been giving signals before the CCTV Camera; but no one came to free him. At that time, the accused person came to know that the CCTV Cameras of the Museum, where the antiques were kept, are not working.
Lastly on October 29, the suspected person along with his associate had visited the Museum. After a long technical analysis, it was revealed that the mobile phone of one of the suspected persons Vinay Parmar was active on October 29 in the surrounding areas of National Museum, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi and he was in regular contact with the co-accused persons and various calls were exchanged between them.
After tracing them, a police team departed for Kolkata to apprehend the suspected persons, where a raid was conducted on November13. The accused Vinay Parmar was apprehended from a hotel situated at Pratapaditya Road, Kolkata and accused Tarun Harvodiya, was also apprehended from another Hotel situated at Tollygungem Kolkata.
