In a significant breakthrough, the Special Cell of the Delhi Police has apprehended Juber Alam alias Danish, a resident of south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar, who was wanted in connection with a sensational 2019 double murder case that shocked the Capital.
The arrest took place in Patna, Bihar, where the accused had been hiding for over two-and-a-half years, officials informed on Wednesday.
HGS Dhaliwal, Special Commissioner of Police, said that Juber Alam is the prime suspect in the gruesome killing of senior citizen couple Virender Kumar Khaneja (77) and his wife Sarla Khaneja (70) in their flat in Mount Kailash, New Delhi on January 18, 2019. The accused also fled with Rs 12 lakh in cash and various pieces of jewellery. Juber Alam, the son of Abdul Samad and a resident of Sangam Vihar, Delhi, was arrested on the intervening night of July 3-4, from a train at Patna Junction, Dhaliwal said.
Juber Alam and his mother, Sabina aka Salma, were initially arrested in connection with the case on January 27, 2019. However, they had absconded after being released on bail.
Although Juber Alam was a juvenile at the time of the offence, due to the heinous nature of the crime and his active role in the brutal killings, the court treated him as an adult for the trial. However, he was granted bail in December 2020. Similarly, Juber’s mother was released on interim bail on May 25, 2021, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both accused individuals subsequently jumped bail and went into hiding to evade trial, Dhaliwal said.
