200 Millennium City skyscrapers slapped with notices for non-renewal of fire safety licenses

Raising concerns over a large number of fire incidents in the Millennium City, the Fire department in Gurugram has issued notices to over 200 high rise buildings for renewal of fire safety license.

Taking into cognisance of ignoring the safety of citizens, the fire department officials have warned of strict action if the builders fail to comply with the law.

Most of the builders have to renew the fire safety license once in a year.

The fire department officials stated that most of them have not renewed their license for over two years.

The fire department officials have also cited that most of these skyscrapers do not have adequate devices that help in dealing with major fire breakouts.

According to a fire department official, plenty of notices and actions have been taken against the builders. But, they are still careless in their approach towards fire safety.

The official also stated that they are issuing over 30 notices daily to these high rise buildings that have not renewed their licenses.

"With lakhs of lives at risk, we will issue most of the builders with a strict warning if they do not renew their license at the earliest. It is important that the residents in such high rises must raise their voices against the builders which do not comply with fire safety norms", added the official.

A large number of fire incidents in the city are reported during the summer months.

Experts say that a major cause of a fire in high rise building is due to poorly maintained electric components and other safety devices.

"Poorly maintained old electric wires are a major source of fire in houses and buildings.

In most of the buildings, the electrical installations are not properly ventilated,"said Dr. VK Paul HOD of Building and Engineering Management of School and Planning Architecture.

He also added that the intense heat in summer season is the results in overheating of these installations which initiates the fire in these high rise buildings.
