15-year-old mentally challenged gangraped

NEW DELHI: A 15-year-old, mentaly challenged girl was gangraped by six accused in east Delhi's Madhu Vihar. The incident is said to have taken place on January 8 when the accused took the girl to a nearby and forced themselves on her. The incident was reported at 9:30 pm. The cops say that the accused were allegedly drunk at the time of the incident.
"Immediately a hunt was launched for the accused who were residing nearby. Local intelligence was gathered and a dedicated team was made to apprehend the accused who committed the crime. We have arrested the accused and are investigating the matter," said DCP East Omvir Singh.
Analyzing the profile of the accused, the cops said that they all are vagabonds and used to roam around the area without any reason. The cops are now checking if anyone of these have a previous involvement in any criminal case and rape in particular. This is the second incident of rape in the park in the recent time after a gangrape was reported in Shalimar Bagh on 16 December where a group of men gangraped a minor girl when she went to the park with her male friend. The cops later arrested the accused.
According to Delhi Police data, around 2,049 rape cases were reported in the year 2017 and the investigation in the rape cases revealed that 38.99 percentage of accused were friends or family friends whereas the involvement of neighbors in the rape was 19.08 percent. Relatives were also found in the involvement of rape cases as their percentage was 14.20. Police further claimed that involvement of strangers in cases of rape in Delhi has shown a decline from 3.57 percent in 2016 to 3.37 percent in 2017.
