New Delhi: About 1,211 CCTV cameras, installed in various parts of the city, were non-functional. There were several reasons behind the non-functioning of cameras, which include poor maintenance, non-availability of spare parts, third party damage. The following revelations were made in a meeting between Delhi Police officers, government enterprise and various other agencies.
Sources said that the meeting was held in October, 2019. Special CP rank officer told meeting attendees about the concern raised by the Delhi Police Commissioner about the non-functioning of CCTV cameras installed by Delhi Police. The police chief has desired to make all the CCTV cameras functional.
Sources told Millennium Post that as many as 521 cameras were non-functional due to non-maintenance by government enterprise. "Out of 521 cameras, there were 224 CCTVs whose parts were not available in the market," sources said.
As many as 690 CCTVs were not in working condition due to inaction on the part of the user police district and ECIL.
The Special CP observed that there was a big coordination gap between user district and ECIL, due to which CCTV cameras were lying non-functional since long. The senior police officer directed all the officials of user district to coordinate with ECIL officials and resolve the issues pending due to non-coordination and causing non-functioning of CCTV cameras.
Special CP further directed officials that out of total non-functioning pending on the part of ECIL, almost half of the cameras were non-functional due to non-availability of spare parts.
"This is a serious issue and being contractual firm ECIL is bound to provide adequate spare parts of the CCTV cameras system so that the functioning of it may not affect adeversely and the system should remain functional un-interruptly," Special CP said in the meeting.
CCTV cameras were found non-functional in various vital places in the city including bordering areas, markets, shooting range, a religious place. "The CCTVs of three important places in New Delhi area were not in workable condition," a source said.
