‘Sushil Kumar Shinde is corrupt,’ says CM Kejriwal
Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues on Monday sat on a dharna outside the Rail Bhawan in the heart of the sensitive New Delhi district after union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde refused to heed to the demand of suspending three Delhi police officers who didn’t carry out the orders of Delhi ministers Somnath Bharti and Rakhi Birla on the intervening night of 14 and 15 January.
In his address to his MLAs and supporters, Kejriwal put the blame squarely on the prime minister, home minister and the Centre for the situation that has led to his dharna and appealed to people to join him. On his arrival at the New Delhi district en route North Block office of the home minister, Kejriwal and his colleagues were stopped at Raisina Raod on account of Republic Day parade rehearsal that is on. Later, after the parade got over, Delhi cabinet was told they could not proceed any further as section 144 of the CrPC banning public assembly has been clamped in the area.
Thereafter, the activist-turned-politician decided to turn to his former self and decided to sit on dharna ‘for at least 10 days’ till his demand was met. Before sitting on dharna, Kejriwal addressed media persons and his supporters on a makeshift public address system alleging that home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde was corrupt. Interestingly, former home secretary RK Singh had alleged that Shinde had shielded businessman close to don Dawood Ibrahim. Calling himself ‘an anarchist,’ Kejriwal called upon the policemen to take off their uniform, take leave from work and join his agitation.
Police and para military forces were deployed in central Delhi in large numbers turning the area into a fortress setting up several blockades and shutting down four metro stations. While Kejriwal had initially said he would be joined only by his MLAs in the protest, after refusal to proceed further than Rail Bhawan, he called upon ‘citizens of Delhi to join the protest’ in large numbers.
Following the call, Delhi police rushed around 4,000 of its men and women to strengthen the cordoning off. Scuffles broke out between police and and AAP volunteers when a tweet was circulated from Kejriwal’s handle that a party MLA was severely beaten up and a number of others injured. Later, Kejriwal claimed that his minister Saurabh Bhardwaj has been arrested, which Delhi police refuted.
‘We will not move out,’ said Kejriwal after a senior police official asked them to move to nearby Jantar Mantar. The commuters, especially the office goers, faced some harassment due to shutting down of the metros and the traffic jam because of police deployment.
When this was brought to the notice of another minister Manish Sisodia, he said, ‘The battle was in the larger interest of the people and they should learn to live with such inconveniences.’ ‘Both Congress and BJP had the agenda of striving for full statehood for Delhi in their manifesto, but they do not support us in trying to bring Delhi police under Delhi government,’ Yogendra Yadav, AAP leader, said.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday hit out both at the Congress and the BJP for not supporting Kejriwal’s government over the current tussle between the Delhi government and the home ministry on the statehood issue. Senior party leader Yogendra Yadav alleged that both parties have double standards. Both parties had the agenda of striving for full statehood for Delhi in their manifesto in the assembly elections.
Yadav justified Kejriwal’s ‘dharna’ outside union minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s office demanding action against the erring Delhi police officials, and said it was necessary because of the troubles faced by the people in the capital. ‘It was unusual for a chief minister to sit on dharna on such a small demand. It was necessary because of the troubles faced by the people of Delhi. Delhi public thinks that the police officials are corrupt, inefficient and not answerable to people, especially to women,’ told Yadav. Yadav hit out at the Delhi police for it’s inaction. ‘Over the last few days, a woman is burnt by her in-laws, the Danish gang-rape case happens, the Khirkee village is raided. All prove the inaction of the Delhi police,’ he said.
Maintain dignity of office: HM
New Delhi: Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Monday asked Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to maintain the dignity of office that he holds and ruled out any action against Delhi police personnel till an inquiry, instituted by the Lieutenant Governor, was over. Shinde also made it clear that the Centre will not hand over Delhi police to the state government. ‘He should maintain garima (dignity) of the chair of chief minister and wait till the judicial probe is completed. After all he is a chief minister, (which is) a high post. He should cooperate,’ said Shinde. ‘Ordering judicial inquiry means fixing of responsibility in an impartial manner. There is no interference in the probe. The Lt Governor has made it clear that the probe will be expedited.’ Shinde said, ‘The whole country is witnessing where is anarchy and who is creating anarchy.’
