The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Friday issued summons to the Secretary, Social Welfare in the suo-moto case of a beggar home that was taken up by the Commission recently. The action was necessitated after no reply on the notices of the Commission was received.
The Commission also issued summons to the FRRO in regard to the non-submission of complete information on the complaint of foreigners detained in there. The Delhi Commission for Women made a surprise inspection of the beggar’s home in Nirmal Chhaya Complex on January 5, 2017. The Commission interacted with the inmates and the staff for several hours. The visit and interaction with the inmates (who were all foreign nationals) and staff brought to light extremely serious human rights violations of women there. The foreign nationals also filed a complaint regarding the human rights violations of women at the beggar home.
The Commission then sent notices to the Department of Social Welfare as well as FRRO Delhi. However, on non-submission of reply by Department of Social Welfare, summons have been issued to its Secretary too. Later, a reply was received from FRRO Delhi but the information was still evasive and incomplete. The Commission then sent summons to the organisation to provide complete information sought in its initial notice. Both organisations have been asked to appear before the Commission on January 17.
