A day after the burnt body of a 16-year-old girl was found in her house in East Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar area by her neighbours, sources said that police suspect that the girl was allegedly sexually assaulted as there were injury marks on her private parts.

Senior officers said that they are questioning the girl’s friends and her mother to ascertain if she was in touch with any boy. Police sources also said that there were strangulation marks on her neck which indicate that she was strangled by someone.

Sources further said that the accused had burnt her body to possibly eliminate that she was sexually assaulted.

According to an investigating officer, neighbours raised an alarm and informed the fire department and the local police when they saw smoke billowing out of the minor girl’s house. Raising an alarm,
they also informed the girl’s mother, who works in a nearby factory.

Police said that they forced open the door of the girl’s room and found that she was lying on the floor of her room, completely burnt.

Preliminary investigation suggested that the minor girl had returned home at around 12.30 pm from her school. Police further said that they received the PCR call at around 2.40 pm, said a police officer.

“We have sent the body of the minor girl for post-mortem. In the initial investigation, we found that there were injury marks on her private parts, we are waiting for the final PM report to establish if she was sexually assaulted,” said a senior investigating officer.
