A 49-year-old Delhi Police head constable was crushed to death when a truck ran over him in a bid to avoid checking at a picket in Outer Ring Road in North Delhi’s Timarpur area on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Abdul Sabbur Khan.

The incident took place around 1.30 am at the Gopalpur red light on the Outer Ring Road when Khan along with a sub-inspector had placed a barricade to stop and check vehicles. Just when they had cleared a car, a truck came but on being asked to stop, it went ahead. In a bid to stop the truck from fleeing, the driver, Dheer Singh, ran over Khan. The driver then dragged the head constable for a few metres after which it managed to flee from the scene.

In the meantime, a passer-by, Dheeraj Tyagi, chased the truck till he finally overpowered the truck at Majnu ka Tilla. However, the errant driver managed to flee.

“We finally apprehended Singh from the house of the truck owner from Tigri village in Malviya Nagar on the early hours of Friday. We later arrested him under Section 304 (culpable homicide) of the IPC at the Timarpur police station,” said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).
