Swagatam Haldar, a student from Panchasayar Siksha Niketan in Kolkata has secured first position in the merit list of the Higher Secondary examinations this year. A science stream student Swagatam has scored 495 marks out of 500.
After 76 days the examination was concluded, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Examination on Monday published the result of the higher secondary examinations.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had congratulated all the rank holders of the Higher Secondary Examinations and certificate of appreciation would be issued to them.
As many as 46 students have found place in the top ten list, most of whom are from various parts of the districts. Though, the students from various city schools have also performed better than the Madhyamik examination.
A total number of 7,89,453 students throughout the state had appeared for the examinations this year, of which 6,33,930 students have passed the examination.
The overall pass percentage is 83.65 this year while in the last year the figure stood at 82.32per cent up from last year. Among the total number of students, 51 per cent of them were girls.
The pass percentage for the girls has increased as compared to the last year. In case of boys, the pass percentage stood at 82.86. This year altogether 2,42,740 students have secured first division. Like Madhyamik examinations, in HS also East Midnapore has highest number of successful candidates.
This is not for the first time Swagatam has ranked in an important examination. In the Madhyamik examinations in 2014 he had secured ninth rank. After Madhyamik, he chose science stream.
Three students have jointly ranked second. They are Novoneel Dey from Cooch Behar Jenkins School, Swarnava Nandi from Balurghat High School and Sanjay Sarkar from Maynaguri Subhas Nagar High School.
All of them secured 492 marks. Nilanjana Saha from Arambagh Girls’ High School stood third by scoring 490 marks. Nilanjana is an Arts student who have secured overall third ranking. She tops the list among the girls.
Diptesh Lala from Itachuna Sree Narayan Institution, Debajyoti Chatterjee from Bankura Zilla School and Shamik Majumder from South Point High School in Kolkata have jointly secured fourth position in the merit list, all of them securing 489 marks.
A resident of Baishnabghata Patuli Township, Swagatam has always been a good student from his childhood days.
His father Pijush Haldar is a general physician and his mother Chandreyi Haldar is a teacher. Swagatam’s younger sister Sayantani will appear for Madhyamik examinations next year.
He had been confident that he would score good marks but he could never imagine that he would top the merit list. He has secured 99 per cent marks.
