Delhi Police have arrested a 24-year-old post graduate student of Amity University for hiring a contract killer for Rs 8 lakh to eliminate his wife. The contract killer has also been arrested. His wife allegedly wanted him to separate from his joint family and due to this reason the couple had marital disorder.

The accused identified as Lalit Dahiya had hired one Sahil and provided him a pistol to kill his wife — Monika. Lalit planned the incident in such a way that prima facie it appears to be a case of murder for robbery. On April 20, Lalit along with his wife and five-month-old daughter were going somewhere in their car. Mid-way in Chhawla, Lalit parked the car in an isolated place allegedly to attend nature’s call.

He then called the contract killer and told him that his wife and daughter are sitting in the car. Sahil reached the spot and shot at her. At the time of the incident, the couple’s five-month-old daughter was sitting on Monika’s lap.

As per the planning when Lalit returned, he made a call to the police control room informing about the incident. When Monika was rushed to the hospital, she was declared dead. On sustained interrogation, Lalit confessed to his involvement in the crime and helped the cops to arrest the contract killer.

According to police, Lalit was depressed from Monika’s behaviour. He told police that his father-in-law is a retired Sub-Inspector of Delhi Police. His wife Monika was free-minded and wanted to live her life independently of joint family restrictions. She used to pressurise him to get separate from his family and shift to some other house.

“Lalit was not inclined and had refused to separate from his family. The refusal added fuel which resulted in several quarrels between the husband and wife. Lalit was under tremendous pressure and wanted to get rid of the situation somehow and could not sustain more pressure. Hence, he planned to eliminate his wife and contacted a contract killer,” said Surender Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-west).
