Update: 2015-05-01 00:17 GMT
As many as 207 teenagers were stopped by the police for underage driving and the car-owners were prosecuted, in a special drive conducted outside 67 leading schools in the city on April 29, police said on Thursday.

The highest number of prosecutions were recorded near schools in East and West Delhi.

More than 1,000 persons have been prosecuted since January this year, when the Delhi Traffic Police intensified its drive against underage driving and started conducting surprise checks outside
schools in every 15 to 20 days, said a senior police official.

He further said that the department had written to all schools in the city, earlier this year, asking them to raise awareness against underage driving and the risks involved at their level.

All the 207 students caught driving vehicles (mostly two-wheelers) on Wednesday were below 18 years and did not hold drivers’ license.

However, in such cases, it is the owner of the vehicle to whom the challans are sent, as the one violating the law are minors and it is the responsibility of the owner, mostly parents, to ensure that the minors do not have access to the wheels, the senior official added.

Of the 207 cases reported on April 29 (Wednesday), 67 cases were reported from West Delhi, 51 from Eastern Delhi, followed by 38 in North Delhi, 27 in Central Delhi and only 24 in South Delhi, revealed police records.

In West Delhi, as many as 25 cases were reported outside a government school in A2 block, Pankha Road, followed by 19 prosecutions outside another government school in Punjabi Bagh, central market.

In West Delhi, as many as 16 prosecutions took place outside the Preet Vihar Public School followed by 11 each from near St Lawrence School and an intersection in Bhajanpura with two schools —
Pratibha Bal Vidyalaya and Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya — in close proximity.
