Ram Bhuj, 24, from Sangam Vihar was declared brain dead at AIIMS on January 2, after he met with a road accident on December 30 here. The family of the deceased agreed to donate his organs.“He was brought to AIIMS Trauma Centre on December 30 with severe head injuries after he met with a bike accident. The primary consent for the organ donation was given by his two brothers and later by his father. His heart was transplanted to a 13-year-old girl from Kolkata, who is undergoing treatment at AIIMS and the kidneys were transplanted to two other adults. The liver was sent to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS),” said Rajeev Maikhuri, transplant coordinator, Organ Retrieval and Banking Organisation (ORBO), AIIMS.

He further told that the liver was split into two and transplanted into a child and an adult. The corneas were healthy and are preserved at hospital to be transplanted later.

The kidneys were transplanted to two women recipients aged 27 and 54, who are undergoing treatment at AIIMS.

Director of AIIMS, MC Misra said, “There were only two cadaver donations last year, which was not very encouraging by our standards. On an average, we have 10-12 cadaver donations every year.
The year before last year 80 brain dead cases were recorded and its conversion rate was 12. But last year, despite 60 brain dead cases, only two could be converted. This year we are hoping to see better conversion rate.”
