2-year-old dies after balcony collapse

A two-year-old girl was killed and her two teenager aunts were injured when the under-construction balcony of their neighbour’s house collapsed on Monday afternoon. The incident was reported from Sultanpuri area in the outer fringes of the national capital.

The deceased was identified as Tamanna, who was playing outside with her aunts Poonam (16) and Neha (17) around 12.30 pm in Sultanpuri’s C-block. All of a sudden, the under-construction balcony in the first floor of their neighbour’s house collapsed. Poonam was the only one who managed to come out of the debris and she was bleeding. Soon locals gathered in the area one of them called up the police.

Officials of the fire department were rushed to the spot and a rescue operation started. In around 15 minutes, they managed to pull out Tamanna and Neha, both in an unconscious state. The three girls were rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where Tamanna later succumbed to her injuries. Poonam and Neha are still being treated there and they are reportedly out of danger, said a police official.

A case of negligence was registered by the police against the owner of the house. However, he is yet to be arrested, the official added. Poonam and Neha, both sisters, were the paternal aunts of Tamanna. They stayed together in a rented accommodation. Tamanna’s parents work in a private firm and they were at the office when the incident took place. They rushed to the hospital when they received a call from the police.
