10-year-old boy dies as drunk driver rams car into family

A 10-year-old boy and two others died in separate accidents in the satellite city on Holi. 

On Thursday night, a speeding Toyota Fortuner hit five members of a family in Sector 41. Police said that the family members met with the accident when they were waiting for a bus at bus shelter and the speeding SUV hit them. They all were taken to a private hospital and admitted to the ICU where the 10-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries while the condition of the others were stated to be critical. Police have registered a case and have arrested the accused who was reportedly driving under the influence of liquor.

According to police, the accident took place around 10 pm when family of the one Arun Mishra, was on their way to their home in Noida’s Phase-II. When the family was waiting for a bus near a petrol pump, a speeding car appeared from wrong side hit them. The impact of the accident was so high that the victims suffered severe injuries. The passers-by, who witnessed the accident, chased the errant Fortuner driver, nabbed and thrashed him before handing him over to the cops.

The victims were immediately taken to Prayag Hospital in Sector 50 where Arun’s son Ankit died. The other family members are Amit (9), Mamta (30), Amresh (24) and Arun (32) who are said to be recuperating. 

“The SUV hit the family from behind and got stuck at a pavement. Passers-by rushed to help and caught the driver of the SUV,” said Zahir Khan, Station House Officer, Sector 39 police station. 

The police also said the owner of the Fortuner, Divam (25), a resident of D-200 in Sector 47, was arrested under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC). 

In another accident on Thursday evening, Ghaziabad resident Vishwanath Singh (55), was crossing the road in front of Fortis Hospital. Police said an unidentified speeding scooter hit him and fled from the spot. “Passers-by informed the police about the incident. A team rushed him to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. We have sought CCTV footages of nearby locations to get a clue about the scooter,” said Pankaj Pant, Station House Officer, Phase III police station. The police said the victim died because of head injury. The body was sent for post-mortem, details of which are awaited.

Another accident occurred on Thursday evening at Okhla barrage where a speeding WagonR allegedly hit a person and fled from the spot. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. The one, Babulal (50), was crossing the road when the car hit him from behind and fled from the spot. 

“The deceased was a resident of slums of Okhla barrage. A case was registered following the incident,” said Zahir Khan, Station House Officer, Sector 39 police station.
