Truck mows down traffic policeman in Dhaula Kuan

New Delhi: A 48-years-old assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Delhi Traffic Police died after being hit by speeding truck in Dhaula Kuan here area on Tuesday morning.

Cops said the deceased policeman Jitender Singh was a was a native of Shabga village in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district and is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. They added that the offending truck driver has been arrested

A senior police officer said the accident occurred when ASI Jitender Singh was on duty in south Delhi, along with constables Pawan, Sandeep and Vijaypal. "At about 7:41, an LGV truck bearing a Delhi number plate coming from Dhaula Kuan side hit ASI Jitender," the officer said.

Though the driver tried to flee on foot, he was quickly nabbed by the on-duty cops.

"The accused, along with truck, was apprehended near Mahipalpur by traffic staff," said the officer, adding that the accused driver was identified as 22-year-old Asfaq, a resident of Nuh in Rajasthan's Mewat.

Immediately after the accident, Singh was rushed to Indian Spinal Injury Hospital in Vasant Kunj, but he succumbed to his injuries.

Another police official said that before joining the Delhi Police Traffic unit, Singh had served in Shahdara and South East districts. "He was the sole bread winner of the family," said the officer.
