No removal of Jawaharlal Nehru University registrar, Bhupinder Zutshi, before completion of his term, said sources on the campus. Zutshi’s term is due to get over on March 31 and is likely to become V-C of Meghalaya University.
“There are no second thoughts, the current registrar Zutshi will complete his term in the office,” sources said.
The registrar is facing criticism from the students for allegedly “mishandling” the Afzal Guru row in connection with which six students have been charged with sedition.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association (JNUTA) has been demanding removal of Zutshi since a letter written by him which had allowed entry of police on the campus was unearthed.
The teachers’ body had red-flagged extension of Zutshi’s term till March 31, 2016 and had conveyed that the step would be a “violation” of the university’s statutes and ordinance which specify 62 years as the age of retirement of even a regular registrar.
The JNUTA members have been questioning the appointment of Zutshi as a nodal officer of the university for the purpose of coordination and replies of Parliamentary questions. They have also alleged that informing police in advance on February 9, when the controversial event that triggered a massive fallout, was intentionally done by the registrar.
