Proverbs may claim that behind every successful man there is a woman, but the cause behind the fall of this unfortunate man, is also a woman. A 25-year-old man was arrested on Friday, for stealing Rs 6 lakhs, including in jewellery, from a temple to meet the demands made by his girlfriend.
The incident took place in north-east Delhi's Mansarovar Park in the last week of April and the accused was arrested on Friday. According to the complainant, the priest at the temple that was robbed by the accused, 'Worshippers had showered a lot of money as offerings at the temple on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti. The robbery took place a day after, at night.’
According to police, after receiving the complaint several raids were conducted to catch the accused based on the pictures recovered from the CCTV footage of the temple. 'A total of Rs 6 lakhs was stolen from the temple, which included Rs 5 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs. 1 lakh (approximately).'
On Friday the 25-year-old accused was arrested from Welcome. He has been identified as Mehraj Khan. Khan lives with his parents in a one-room rented accommodation in the area. During interrogation he confessed to the crime and also revealed his reasons for committing the crime.
Khan told investigators that his 20-year-old girl friend, a resident of the Mansarovar Park area, was very demanding. A graduate, she is from a well-off family and used to dominate him as he was uneducated and unemployed. If he was ever unable to meet her demands, she would threaten to break off the relationship.
The accused told the police that on the day of the crime, a minor scuffle took place between the two, because Khan had gone to meet her without taking any gifts for her. This prompted him to plan the theft and the crime was committed the same day. 'After his arrest he claimed that one more person was involved in the act. Based on information provided by him, a man-hunt has been launched to trace him,' the official said.
On Tuesday morning, the accused’s girl friend was also summoned to the police station to verify the allegations made by the accused. She was released within few hours after being questioned. 'A case under section-380(theft) of Indian Penal Code has been registered against Khan at the Mansarovar park police station. So far Rs. 1.80 lakhs has been recovered,' he added.
