The youth was identified as Dabboo Singh, who worked at his father’s small cigarette outlet in Jai Singh Road. He reportedly shouted no slogans or made any demands while executing the act, said a police official.
“The incident took place at around 5.15 pm. He was stopped by police officers stationed near the Union minister’s bungalow. He was found to be in a semi-conscious state and was immediately rushed to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital,” said Jatin Narwal, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi).
He further added that the reason behind the act can be ascertained only after the statement of the youth is recorded. The police are waiting for him to come to senses.
According to a source, the youth was either under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
However, this can only be ascertained after a medical examination. Dabboo also had several blade marks on both his arms along with a number of needle marks, apparently pointing towards heroin addiction, which is yet to be confirmed by the medical report.
The police are also examining if he had any previous record of attempting suicide.
Dabboo’s father Surender Singh told the police that he was unemployed and so he had forced Dabboo to run the business in his absence.
