Youth arrested for trying to extort money

A 19-year-old youth has been arrested after he allegedly tried to extort money from his former employer in South Campus area of South Delhi, police said on Thursday.

Vinod Gautam alias Saroj, a resident of Hardoi district of UP, was arrested on 13 March after an FIR was registered in this case. The incident came to light on 12 March when one Parveen Mehta, owner of a tent house approached police.

‘He told us that he had received a call on his mobile phone, in which the caller identified himself as ‘Bittu Gujjar’, a notorious criminal of UP and threatened that he would shoot his son dead, if he did not pay a ransom of Rs 6 lakh,’ said deputy commissioner of police (South) B S Jaiswal. Following the complaint a case was registered at South Campus police station and investigation was taken up. On analysing the call records and examination of the workers of complainant, the caller was identified as a resident of Hardoi, UP. The caller was contacted and lured to collect ransom amount from complainant’s godown. A trap was laid and as soon as Gautam reached there to collect the money, he was overpowered and arrested, said Jaiswal.
