Work on elevated Kalindi Kunj bypass to start soon

“This project was initiated by the PWD in 2003, but it ran into several hurdles due to land acquisition issues with the Uttar Pradesh government,” informed Baroka.

The long-pending project is expected to provide relief to commuters travelling between Delhi and Faridabad.

A CAG report had also blamed it on PWD to ‘rush’ into the project without obtaining necessary approvals and land from Uttar Pradesh government. The tender to construct the 6.5-kilometre-long bypass road in Kalindi Kunj was awarded in March 2003 at a cost of Rs 63.41 crore. The project was to start on 15 May, 2003 and supposed to be completed by 14 May, 2005. The CAG report stated that the PWD had spent Rs 52 crore on the project so far.

However, PWD’s secretary Baroka, while rejecting the charges levelled in the CAG report claimed only Rs 4 crore were spent on the project.

“The new road will be an elevated corridor. Earlier, there were plans to construct the road along the river banks, which invited objections from UP government”, said a PWD official.

The Delhi Urban Art Commission has also given clearance for the project, he added. Earlier, their
was a proposal to build elevated portion on two columns. “But the commission feels that for better utilisation of space below, and also from aesthetic point of view, the possibility of single column needs to be explored,” said the PWD official.

According to the new proposal, the bypass will start near DND flyover loop and run parallel to it till Batla House. From there, it will pass through the old Agra Canal (no longer in use) and later connect with the Badarpur bypass.
