Won’t support BJP: Kejriwal

Update: 2013-12-11 00:06 GMT
Kejriwal countered claims made by his colleague Prashant Bhushan that had triggered speculation over a divide in the year-old party, just after its spectacular electoral success.

He went one step ahead and asked honest leaders with clean images from other parties to join AAP, to bring about a change in this corrupt system.

‘There are many good people in the existing political parties who feel stifled. I urge them to either revolt within their parties and improve them or leave their parties and come join us’, he said.

The party leader said, ‘Neither will we take support nor give support to BJP. There is no question about that’. He further advised the BJP, who is the single largest party with 31 seats in the 70-member house, to take power with the help of the Congress, which has eight legislators.

The AAP finished with 28 seats in its maiden electoral debut. A party must have at least 36 legislators on its side to enjoy a clear majority. ‘Let the BJP and Congress join hands... Both indulge in corruption. The BJP is the single largest party. Let them join hands with the Congress and form a government,’ he added.

Kejriwal said AAP leader and lawyer Prashant Bhushan’s suggestion that AAP could give selective support for a BJP government was his personal view. ‘It (was) his personal opinion. (What I am saying) is the party’s opinion.’

Senior party leader Prashant Bhushan fell in line with the party’s view. Bhushan said there was no question of supporting the BJP, as the one-year-old AAP was created as an alternative to national parties such as Congress and the BJP. ‘We cannot support or take support from the Congress and BJP. My comment was in a rhetorical context ... if in case the two parties also follow the AAP policies and ideologies,’ he clarified.

The party said they would prefer to sit at opposition despite making significant gains in the Delhi assembly elections. The party further said that this is also a bitter truth that people have not given them full mandate to form the government. They’ve made it clear that they will not hesitate to go for re-elections in the state.
