According to the police, the incident took place on Thursday at around 2.30 pm at Flat No 31, Pocket A, Mayur Vihar phase-III. Madhubala and her two children - Himanshu (14) and her nine-year-old daughter - were at home while Ajay Gupta (41), her husband, a silver jewellery dealer, had gone to Khora Colony for a business deal with his friend Raj Kumar.

‘At 2.30 pm someone knocked the door and Madhubala went to open it. Two men introduced themselves as courier boys, pushed her inside and managed to get in. In the meantime, two more armed assailants entered the house and took her two children hostage at knife point. When Madhubala tried to raise an alarm, one of the robbers strangled her to death,’ an officer said, quoting one of the children who has given a statement.

After strangling her, the robbers ransacked the house and fled with cash, jewellery and other valuables. They also tied the children and locked them in a room.

At around 3.30 pm, one of the neighbours saw the front door open and went inside to see if there was any problem. She saw Madhubala lying unconscious on the floor, raised an alarm and ran to her house to make a call to police control room. When a police team reached the spot, they took the body to a nearby hospital where Madhubala was declared dead. The children later narrated the entire incident to the police.

A forensic team has collected finger prints and other evidence from the crime scene.  ‘A case under the appropriate sections of the IPC has been registered at New Ashok Nagar police station and a search is on,’ Ajay Kumar, DCP, said.
