With you, for you always: Delhi police resolves to get image makeover

Several major crimes raised questions over the police’s ability to ensure provide a safe city to Delhiiites. As the world enters the New Year, senior police officers want to wash off all the stains and have made resolutions, which they intend to follow throughout the year, to reassure people.

In order to understand how people perceive the police, Millennium Post approached the public for their response. A majority of people said that they were sceptical about approaching the police in cases theft of mobile phone, wallets, ID cards and other such documents because of the adversarial attitude of officers posted at police stations.

Certain officers have vowed to change this image in the minds of the people and stand up to the department’s slogan of ‘With you, for you always’.

LAW AND ORDER


Deepak Mishra, special police commissioner (law and order), has promised to instruct his officials to stay polite and calm while dealing with the complainants irrespective of the nature of the complaint. ‘We will satisfy each and every complainant,’ he said. Talking about his resolution, Mishra said, ‘Large number of cases will be registered and more policing services will be provided to Delhiites.’

TRAFFIC

Huge jams and long snarls have put a brake on Delhi’s fast life. But the police has vowed to deal with the problem seriously in 2014.

Taj Hassan, special commissioner of police (traffic) said, ‘Delhi police traffic department had identified certain corridors that face major traffic problems, especially during peak hours. We have planned several things to facilitate smooth traffic on these corridors. Heavy deployment of traffic policemen will be the first priority.’

Public transport users will not have to put up with misbehaving auto-rickshaw drivers. ‘Action will be taken against each complaint made on the traffic helpline number 1095, meant to register complaints against auto-rickshaw drivers. Extra staff will be deployed to attend and investigate these complaint calls. We will also ensure women’s safety while commuting in public transport,’ Hassan added.

‘Curbing drunk driving will be the top most concern. Also, better heavy vehicles’ management is to be implemented this year. Several complaints of rash driving by heavy vehicles are being received so those drivers will be taught the basics of lane driving,’ Delhi police traffic department has vowed.

TRAINING

Changes will be made to the training process of the police officers to ensure that they are more sensitive in dealing with the masses. To ensure quality training of officers, SN Srivastava, special police commissioner (special cell and training) said, ‘We want to provide quantitative training to our total staff members. Every policeman must be trained according to their respective duties using a structured and organised training programme. These trainings will be given by the concerned person by visiting each police station and other departments to train them according to the changing trends of policing.’

OPERATIONS


Faced with charges of not managing the helplines and lack of proper patrolling by PCR vans, the Delhi police is gearing up to address the issue.

TN Mohan, special police commissioner (operations) who is responsible for managing the entire police control room department that includes the management of PCR calls, functioning and deployment of PCR vans. Delhi police has 800 PCR vans and 110 helpline desks to attend to calls made on the helpline number 100.
