With salaries for Feb disbursed, sanitation workers call off strike

The employees association, which had asked the employees not to collect garbage and waste from their areas, announced the move after getting salary for the month of February on Tuesday evening.

The employees have assured to remove the garbage pile-ups across various parts of the city as a result of their strike, post joining duty. “The strike was called-off as their salaries for February has been dispensed,” informed BB Tyagi, chairman of Standing Committee, East Corporation. The North MCD Standing Committee chairman, MP Bhardwaj, also announced the calling off the strike.

More than 13,000 sanitation workers from East Corporation and 17,000 from North Corporation had gone on strike from Friday demanding immediate disbursement of their salaries and other facilities. They had started dumping garbage at various places across the city as part of their protest.

Despite the Corporations’ appeal to resume work, the employees had refused to collect waste and garbage resulting is massive garbage pile-up on various roads, open areas and dhalaos. The miffed employees also staged series of protests and burnt effigies of Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal.

Intensifying their ongoing protest on the first working day, scores of protesters had dumped garbage on the East and North Corporation area. The agitation had also caused massive traffic snarls in several parts of the city during the peak hours. The protesters, who are fourth grade employees, were protesting against the AAP government, the Centre and the civic bodies. They had protested in large groups at Patparganj, Laxminagar Metro station, GTB hospital, Narela, Rohini, Bawana, among other places.

“The Corporations, after several rounds of talks, have released the salary for February, assuring to discuss other demands. Now, we have decided to call off the indefinite strike and resume duty from Wednesday. For our other demands, we have given them a three-month time frame and if Corporations fail to pay heed to them, we shall not hesitate to halt civic services again,” said Rajkumar Dhingan, a representative of employees, who met with the EDMC Commissioner on Tuesday.
