Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said the launch of the Food Security Programme in Delhi will be remembered as an historical event. Highlighting the importance of the launch, Dikshit said the event assumes greater significance since it coincides with the birth anniversary of former prime minister late Rajiv Gandhi — ‘a source of inspiration for all of us’.
UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday launched the Food Security Program in Delhi at a function organised at Talkatora Stadium.
Speaking at the function, Dikshit said, ‘The presence of Soniaji has boosted our morale. The UPA government at the Centre has provided many rights such as Right to Information, Right to Education and now the Right to Food. The Right to Food is an extraordinary legal right which is being granted to people in accordance with the thoughts and commitment of Sonia Gandhi.’
Dikshit added that from 1 September onward 32 lakh people in Delhi would be getting rice at Rs 3 per kg, wheat at Rs 2 per kg through the senior-most head of the family.
The city government would achieve the target to cover 73 lakh persons in the next few months under the scheme. The distribution of food grains would be effected through Aadhar-based National Food Security cards. Delhi has already enrolled 98 per cent of its population under Aadhar.
Dikshit deplored the political parties which are opposing Food Security Bill in Parliament. ‘The UPA is committed to get it passed through Parliament. The Right to Food would also accelerate the pace of women empowerment,’ she said.
Delhi food and supplies Minister Haroon Yusuf, who was also present on the occasion, took a dig at the parties opposing the move and said he hoped that the almighty would grant wisdom to those political parties opposing Food Security Bill in Parliament.
He claimed that the Congress was committed to ensuring the welfare and upliftment of the poor. ‘The party has not changed its agenda. The government has taken substantial initiatives by successfully implementing Dilli Annashree Scheme, Kerosene-free Delhi scheme, pension to aged and widows and others. Our government is a sensitive government in true sense, Yusuf added.
Meanwhile, Sonia showered praise on Dikshit, saying Delhi government under her leadership has changed the face of the city and ensured ‘unparallelled development’ in the last 15 years.
‘The way the Congress government in Delhi under the leadership of chief minister Sheila Dikshit changed the face of Delhi in the last 15 years is in front of you. You yourself can feel the difference between the Delhi of today and what it was 15 years back,’ Gandhi said.
The Congress chief the Delhi government has ensured a better quality of life by improving basic amenities and initiating ‘pro-people’ policies.
