The chairman of the panel, set up by the government to suggest remedial measures to address concerns of the people of Northeast, on Thursday said he would try to listen to the voice of the affected people besides exploring the option of framing an anti-racial legislation.

Former IAS officer MP Bezbaruah, who will head the six- member committee, said the panel will have wide-ranging discussions with people from the region who faced attacks in Delhi and other parts of the country, besides addressing ways to allay their concerns.

‘I have an open mind. We will try to listen to the voice of the affected people and all those who are concerned over the problems being faced by the people of Northeast,’ he said.

The former union tourism secretary said the committee will deliberate and find ways to stop such attacks on the people from Northeast.

‘Is there a need for such a legislation? Definitely there is. But the larger question is implementation on the ground,’ he said when asked whether the panel will suggest framing an anti-racial legislation.

Bezbaruah said he had spent most of his life working for the people of the Northeast and would try his best to do whatever he could to reduce their suffering.

Former IAS officers HW T Syeim, Allen Temshi Jamir, Tape Bagra and P Bharat Singh will be members of the committee which will have deputy secretary in Ministry of Home Affairs S Saha as member secretary.

Meanwhile scores of Northeast students on Thursday marched towards Parliament and courted arrest demanding an anti-racism law in wake of the death of Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania after being allegedly beaten up by some shopkeepers in south Delhi.
