The time gap between the resolution in Indian parliament on Sri Lanka on Thursday and voting on the US-sponsored resolution in Geneva is going to be little. According to sources in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussion on the resolution in Geneva is likely to begin by 10.30 am local time (which means 3 pm in India) and voting is expected by late evening.
In New Delhi, the government is not expected to articulate its stand before the end of the day as it has to marshal all its resources to have a majority on the floor of the house to ward off the pressure created by DMK. The government is jostling with the issue with DMK withdrawing ministers and a series of inter-government and intra-government meetings held throughout Wednesday, in a bid to ensure stability of the government.
India’s representative to the UN office in Geneva, Dilip Sinha, reached New Delhi on Wednesday morning and held consultations with foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Sinha would be present in Geneva at the time of the voting.
