Will file a case of defamation against AAP: Sher Singh Dagar

Update: 2014-09-09 23:10 GMT
Immediately after the release of a sting operation video by Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal in which Delhi BJP vice-president Sher Singh Dagar was allegedly seen offering Rs 4 crore to AAP MLA from Sangam Vihar, Dinesh Mohaniya, tension prevailed in the office throughout the day as crisis managers were roped in even from the Central unit of the party.

Speaking to the media, Dagar questioned authenticity of the video and offered to quit politics if the charges were proved true. ‘I will file a case of defamation against AAP. The tape is not genuine. Mohaniya himself came to meet me at my residence, I never went to his home.

He along with his four colleagues wanted to join BJP but there was no offer of money,’ said Dagar.
‘I never had a word with any person referred to as ‘high command’ as I was not satisfied myself with his claims,’ he added.

Initially, mediapersons were informed about a press conference at Delhi BJP head office to be jointly addressed by Sher Singh Dagar and BJP’s national spokesperson Sambit Patra at 2 pm. But later the venue was shifted to Dagar’s residence in South Extension. Neither Patra nor any other senior BJP leader turned up for the press conference and Dagar himself clarified his stand to the media. Dagar’s entry to  politics was when he was a student and actively participated in students’ politics.

He was elected the general secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1972-73. He was councillor in erstwhile MCD, contested MLA elections from Mehrauli assembly segment in 2008 but lost by 1,108 votes.

He was in the race for a BJP ticket from Mehrauli or Greater Kailash but the saffron brigade fielded Pravesh Verma from Mehrauli.

The party appointed Dagar as vice-president of Delhi BJP to appease him. Mehrauli MLA seat is presently vacant after Verma became MP from West Delhi and resigned. Dagar is one of the main contenders from this seat.

‘We demand an independent agency to verify the authenticity of the video. We are also sending notice to Dagar to clarify his stand,’ said Sambit Patra.

Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhayay said: ‘The BJP does not believe in manipulation or dealings and it also does not approve of such activities in any form.’
