The UEFA European Championship which has been in world stage for all to witness has bore the vision of one man Henry Delaunay. The Championship has entered its 14th edition to be held in Poland-Ukraine to mark the champions of Europe once again.
Held every after four years this coveted competition is considered the next big thing after the World Cup. Today all the dazzles that are associated with everybody in concern Euro has gone from strength to strength with every single edition since 1960. It therefore owes to Henry Delaunay who once visioned this reality when soccer would meet its grandeur stature to take the world to witness with awe.
In 1927 Henry Delaunay first UEFA General Secretary and former French national association general secretary added to the French drive for such a tournament. He submitted a proposal to UEFA in conjunction with the great Austrian official Hugo Meisl, for the creation of a European cup.
The basic idea was for to run concurrently with the World Cup, which would involve a qualifying competition every two years. Delaunay had inflicted the idea of an involvement with all European associations building a platform that it would promote the game keeping all other concerns in mind. The layout of the tournament was thought in a way where teams would play a fixed number of matches and they weren't deemed to play the same team always.
After his death his son Pierre joined the drive in achieving Henry's vision. The European Nations' Cup was formed and the new competition was named the Henri Delaunay Cup to pay homage to Delaunay's services in European Football. In 1958 the first Championship match was held on 28th September in Moscow's Central Stadium – the USSR beating Hungary 3-1.
The inaugural competition took place over 22 months between 1958 and 1960 and thus the advent of UEFA Euro came to existence showing there is a place for dreamers and believers.
