Mateen Ahmed, MLA (Seelampur)
Indian National Congress MLA from Seelampur constituency, Mateen Ahmed, entered politics in October 1993 and straightaway was elected member of Delhi Vidhan Sabha. Ahmed was also the general secretary of Block Congress in 1996, vice-president, Delhi Pradesh Congress in 1997, and chairman Block Development Committee in 2000. At present, he is also the chairman of Delhi Wakf Board since 2004. In an interview with Dipanshu Roy, the 54-year-old shares his experience. Excerpts:
How did you begin your career?
Before choosing politics as a career, I was serving in Delhi Development Authority (DDA). With the help of veteran politician Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, I started my political career. I didn’t contest for councillor’s seat and was straightaway chosen as MLA from my constituency. After that, there was no looking back.
Tell us something about your constituency?
When I took over my constituency, roads were in bad shape, there were hardly any sewer lines, transportation or hospital facilities New sewer lines were then laid, a 200-bed hospital was constructed with the help of government, and new dispensaries and schools were opened.
What are your upcoming projects?
An auditorium would be completed in Shastri Park and a Baraat Ghar would come up on DDA land. Also, a Delhi Jal Board office will be established in our area, so as the residents don’t face any problems in depositing their water bills.
What is your take on next year assembly elections?
We would be banking on developmental work as our party Congress and individual MLAs have done a lot of work for the people. We would win for sure.
