In an obvious effort to mend fences and soothe frayed nerves at Singur–the new State Agriculture Minister Becharam Manna–assured farmers that the state Government’s promise of returning the land acquired by the CPIM Government for the Tata’s Nano plant in 2006 will be returned within two month’s time.

About 3500 farmers received the promised cheap rice and stipend of Rs 2000 per family per month(with arrears)in the last two days. This was promised by the CM Mamata Banerjee after the return of the land got stuck in court battles with the Tatas. Manna went a step further on Sunday though. ‘The legal setback is due to a collusion between the Tatas, the Court and the CPIM. We can frame new laws for Singur’, Manna accused. The case now awaits a verdict from the SC.

Manna tried to remind the farmers that the agitation which cost them their land in the run up to the assembly elections in 2011 that the state govt will not let their struggle go in vain. In 2011 Banerjee had passed the Singur Act in state assembly which would enable her govt to return the land to the farmers in Singur.
