The quality of water in south Delhi region is fit for drinking as per norms, but not in north and east Delhi. This was revealed in the report of a joint sample analysis by Delhi Jal Board [DJB] and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).
‘The water quality in all four zones of SDMC was found as per standards and fit for drinking,’ said Subhash Arya, Chairman of Standing Committee, SDMC. However, the report thumbs down water quality in North Delhi Municipal Corporation [NDMC], 57-80 per cent impurity was found in the joint sampling. ‘The water in NDMC areas is not fit for drinking and could cause diseases,’ added Arya.
The results were also supported in individual sample analysis of corporations.
The quality of water in Delhi has been a matter of dispute among DJB and corporations. The corporations had earlier pulled up DJB for bad quality of water in Delhi for which DJB had upheld its sample system and water quality analysis reports claiming water quality as per the standards of World Health Organisation [WHO]. MCD had collected 116 samples from different areas of Delhi out of which 81 samples were claimed to be unfit for drinking purposes.
In the sample analysis water is tested for chemical and bacteriological parameters.
On an average, 300 to 400 water samples are collected per day from various locations from all parts of the city, including from consumers.
