Walking the talk

Update: 2014-07-04 21:47 GMT
At a time when politicians are threatening rape, banning free speech in all forms (books, movies, TV serials), it is heartening to see the rich and mighty come together at one platform to talk about various issues. The occasion was Rtn Sanjay Khanna taking charge as the new District Governor, Rotary International District 3010.

Talking to Millennium Post, Khanna said he was ready to take the legacy forward. When asked what will be the working areas in his tenure, Khanna had a list ready for us. ‘Honestly there are more issues to take up than I can tell you in one day. But we are all prepared. You already know that there is Microsoft India onboard with us. Apart from this, I will be taking up the issue of water management. We are going set up selfhelp groups where the focus will be on involvement of more and more women from different villages. Also, I will be pushing for women’s compulsory education. And of course, we are going to build our own diabetic van,’ revealed Khanna.

One of the speakers at the do, Delhi High Court lawyer, Vikas Gupta, however has only one agenda for not only the next one year but the next decade and beyond. It is to take up the issue of the failure to implement Right to Education Act. Talking about it Gupta said, ‘The RTE Act, 2009 which represents the consequential legislation envisaged under Article 21A, means that every child has a right to full time elementary education of satisfactory and equitable quality in a formal school which satisfies certain essential norms and standards. The Act makes it compulsory for all unaided private and nonminority schools to reserve 25% seats for the underprivileged children.’

He went on to express his disappointment in unaided private and nonminority schools for not adhering to the guidelines laid down in the Act. While talking to Millennium Post, Gupta gave out his future plans: ‘My line of action is clear. I want to seek answers from the schools not following the RTE guidelines. I will personally go to these Schools, if required, and make sure they implement the 25% reservation as stated in the Act.’
