Wait for pediatric hernia operation in CNBC may go upto 9 months or more

The situation does not seem to be better in other public hospitals too. Speaking to the senior doctors at the public hospitals and families of the infants suffering from hernia, a long waiting time came to the fore for the surgery of pediatric hernia.

Even if there is a long waiting time at the public hospitals they are still preferred over the private ones owing to the huge expenses for surgery at private hospitals.

At present there are six public hospitals in Delhi that provide surgery of pediatric hernia. These public hospitals are Kalawati Hospital, Lok Nayak Hospital, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Safdarjung Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and CNBC.

Sharing some vital information with Millennium Post on the high number of cases of pediatric hernia operated at CNBC, the Director’s office, CNBC, disclosed that there are around 15 hernia surgeries which take place per week at CNBC in the eight operating theatres that are functional per week for all kinds of operations. On high demands, occasionally there are two theatres that are solely dedicated to surgery of pediatric hernia.

There can be more than 200 surgeries that can occur at one operating table on peak days, added the source.In mentioning that infants who are not even a day old have been operated, Dr Anup Mohta Director CNBC acknowledged that there is high number of patients that require surgery for pediatric hernia and the inability of the hospital to meet such demand is leading to a longer waiting time for surgery.

 “At one point of time the waiting time for surgery of pediatric hernia extended to one-and-a -half years but we have tried to bring it down to 9 months,” said Dr Anup Mohta Defining pediatric hernia as a condition in which the remains of the abdominal cavity of the child descends into the scrotum thereby, causing complications like abdominal distention, inability to pass stool and greenish vomiting, Dr Anup Mohta emphasised on the seriousness of the disease  where in many cases surgery is recommended by the doctors.
