Matthew Wade hit a thrilling last-ball century to set up a 92-run victory for Australia over Pakistan in the first one-day international at the Gabba on Friday.
Wade reached his hundred from the last ball of the Australian innings, off exactly 100 balls, as the hosts recovered from 78-5 to post 268-9 from their 50 overs.
Two wickets in the space of two overs for James Faulkner derailed Pakistan after a steady start and they were unable to recover, eventually collapsing to 176 all out in the 43rd over.
The Aussies made a stuttering start to their innings with David Warner (seven) and Steve Smith (0) dismissed by Mohammad Amir (2-54) in successive deliveries and when debutant Chris Lynn (16) fell to Hasan Ali (3-65) in the final over of the powerplay, they were 52-3.
Imad Wasim (2-35) then removed opener Travis Head (39) and Mitchell Marsh (four) but the visitors were unable to press home their advantage as Glenn Maxwell (60 from 56 balls) and Wade counter-attacked to put on 82 for the sixth wicket.
After Maxwell and Faulkner (five) were dismissed, it was left to Wade to guide the tail through the final 16 overs and he did so superbly, farming the strike while keeping the score moving. He was rewarded with a century, brought up with a single from the final ball of the innings.
In reply, Pakistan progressed smoothly through the first eight overs before Faulkner ousted Sharjeel Khan (18) and Mohammad Hafeez (four) within the space of six balls, with Azhar Ali, struggling with a thigh injury, retiring hurt in between.
For the next 25 overs, wickets fell at regular intervals as, one after another, the Pakistan middle order proceeded to get in and get out just as they were establishing themselves - Babar Azam top-scoring with 33.
Azhar (24) returned to the crease after the sixth wicket went down but was dismissed by Faulkner (4-32) not long afterwards. Amir (eight) was the Aussie all-rounder’s fourth victim and it was left to Pat Cummins (3-33) to wrap up the win with the wicket of Wahab Riaz (six).
