Violence that affects nation won’t be tolerated: Modi

Update: 2014-08-10 22:49 GMT
Speaking at the BJP National Council meet at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Modi said, ‘Those who could not do anything for 60 years are asking for an account of 60 days. But our path is right, we have been successfully able to gauge the situation and we will succeed, this belief is gaining ground.’

In a veiled attack on the Congress party, he said, ‘Even after suffering from such a disgraceful loss (in the Lok Sabha polls), they are still indulging in vote bank politics. It was them who begged for votes on Food Security Act and later tried to snatch food from the poor at the WTO.

Each year can be dedicated to an issue about the welfare of the society and not necessarily restricted to politics.’

Welcoming a clear mandate from the people, he said, ‘The world’s perception of India has suddenly changed. The biggest reason I feel is that government has come with people’s mandate. I thank all of them and I will commit myself to serve for their betterment.’

While referring new BJP chief Amit Shah as the ‘man of the match’ and Rajnath Singh as the ‘captain’ of the team that won the Lok Sabha elections, Modi said, ‘It was not possible for one PM to run the country. We need 100-200 PMs in each polling booth. PM means primary members. People have given their verdict, it is our turn now. We will adequately fulfill the aspirations of people.’

He said, ‘There was need to take the BJP in two directions. Our party workers have to expand their work throughout the country and it should have a distinct identity in terms of maintaining a strong connection with the people on ground level. Every year will be a special year for the BJP. It’s a new beginning of a new chapter. We have to improve our standards. We have to sacrifice the party for the country.’

He asked the new party president to start thinking over dedicating each year to promote social causes such as energy conservation, toilets, girl child education etc. ‘For instance, one year can be dedicated to energy saving the next to building toilets in villages. No house in the country will be without toilet. Each decision should be taken for benefit of the country,’ he said.

Claiming that for him the country is greater than the party, he said, ‘During the Emergency, I along with other leaders sacrificed the Jana Sangh for the country, thinking desh ka hith (national welfare) was supreme. I would like to make it clear that our party will not tolerate any act of violence that affects the nation.’

While accepting that he neither had knowledge about the ‘geography’ of Parliament nor about the streets of Delhi, he said, ‘I did not know the geography of Parliament, and did not know about the gali-mohalla (streets and colonies) of Delhi. People thought what he will do in Delhi. Even I thought so.’

Earlier, in the day top BJP leaders from across the country ratified the appointment of party
president Amit Shah. Party leaders have adopted political and economic resolutions and discussed
issues and the initiatives taken by the BJP-led NDA government and its roadmap ahead.
