Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, on Tuesday, laid the foundation stone for comprehensive development of corridor from Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh, in the presence of Union Communication Minister Kapil Sibal at Vikas Puri in west Delhi.
Dikshit said her government was committed to provide a smooth transport system, as Delhi was one of the most populous cities of the world, with major roads choking due to high intensity of traffic.
PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, west Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra, MLAs Nand Kishore, Bijender Singh, O P Babbar and S L Garg were also present on this occasion.Dikshit said the corridor will facilitate smooth movement of traffic and the first phase of the signal-free stretch on Outer Ring Road is expected to begin later this month. The Rs 559.60-crore project will include construction of a 3.3 km elevated road from Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh, that will zip over five intersections.
The projects undertaken by Public Works department are a part of a Rs 2,200 crore project that seeks to make a 17-km stretch from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad in north Delhi on the Outer Ring Road signal-free.
Speaking on the occasion, Chauhan said PWD was ready to take up another mega project, costing Rs 3,000 crore to make Outer Ring Road from Meera Bagh to Wazirabad signal-free. The project would involve construction of six flyovers. The flyovers will come up between Meera Bagh and Deepali Chowk, Badli and Mukarba Chowk and three other flyovers.

Delhi has become the first state in the country to ban manual scavenging. Henceforth, no safai karamchari would be deployed for manual cleaning, as it is fatal. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, on Monday, expressed these views in Swabhiman celebrations organised by Delhi commission for safai karamcharis at Vigyan Bhawan. Delhi Assembly Speaker Dr yoganand Shastri, Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami, and chairman, Delhi Commission for Safai karamchari, Harnam Sigh, were present on the occasion. Dikshit said Dalits have struggled a lot in the past and it is time to remove obstacles in the way of their development. She also stated that her government has set up Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar university.
