Senior BJP leader Vijay Goel was appointed the president of the Delhi unit of the party on Friday evening. According to a press release issued by the party, his appointment is effective with immediate effect. ‘National president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rajnath Singh, has appointed Vijay Goel as state president of Delhi Pradesh. The decision is effective with immediate effect,’ said the press statement issued by the party national headquarter on Friday evening.
With the announcement of the decision, the party has also almost ended the speculation about its chief ministerial candidate in poll-bound Delhi. According to sources in the party, Goel defeated his close contestant, Harshvardhan, who is former president of Delhi BJP and sitting MLA from Krishna Nagar. Goel is said to be close to national president Rajnath Singh, which will give him advantage to coordinate with central leadership.
Goel is also the national general secretary of the party. According to sources, Harshvardhan was the favourite candidate of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, and party veteran Lal Krishna Advani. The outgoing president, Vijender Gupta, had the support of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitely, but the alleged mismanagement in MCD elections cost him the post.
Goel, has been a member of parliament in 11th , 12th and 13th Lok Sabha and Union Minister of State from 2001-04 in Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government. He started his political career with ABVP, student wing of BJP and was elected president of Delhi University Students Union.
